Soup Kitchen

This is my last report for the season on the soup kitchen revival!  This project has beenn amazing ride to get it to where it is right now at the end of June. Jody is a phenomenal advocate and volunteer for the soup kitchen, Pair Jody with Dona Ara and Susana Camara and there we have a dynamic trio! They have worked together to turn the soup kitchen into a 3 day a week service for the needy families of Chicxulub. Clients of the service are helping with the activities to keep the soup kitchen tidy and ready for the next day! The soup kitchen is now up and running 3 days a week, still 2 days short but it is moving ahead. The summer will tell us whether the community has embraced this community kitchen or not. The soup kitchen is receiving from the community all of the foods we outlined in previous blogs and the Chicxulub Food Bank has covered the cost of chicken until the end of July. Our families will receive 3 meals a week over the summer and September will tell a new...

Chicxulub Soup Kitchen

Well, things are moving ahead.  The soup kitchen is now open 3 days a week (M-T-F) feeding a variable number (70)  of children, seniors and moms who arrive around 12:30 to put something warm in their tummies. I would like to say thank you to all of you who donated food to the soup kitchen as when you were going home.  These additions helped the volunteers extend their meals day in and day out, so please know you all made a difference in the lives of Chicxulub people who visit the soup kitchen. Susana Camara is working with a group of her friends in Merida to  organize funding as groups of people are asked to support on a weekly or daily basis as best they can. There will be a Recognition Wall to show the folks who are wanting this acknowledgement as well as a calendar that indicates whose “day” it is. The clients are being mobilized to help with the cleaning up after the lunch to help the work team of the day.  The week of May 6th saw one family help with sweeping and putting chairs away. Dona Ara now has 3 groups of ladies willing to work in the kitchen so now it will be open Mon-Tues and Fri and that is exciting. Thanks to Susana Camara and her hard work, the soup kitchen will now receive a donation of 20 kilos of fish every 2 weeks from the Zacharias Cun family in Progreso. The clients will receive a weekly meal of fish cooked with love and expertise by Dona Ara and her volunteers. The kitchen also receives...

Things are beginning to come together for the soup kitchen and the people of Chicxulub.  Last month you heard about  the response from the staff at the kitchen.  Well I encourage you to watch for more updates over the next few months as Jody collects the data to know the costs of eeding the poor folks and a remarkable woman, Susana Camara who has stepped up to help put a plan in place to help the kitchen be assisted by the community. Susana, as I discovered has been helping the soup kitchen for the past 3 years during semana santa with her donation of food so the kitchen can be open 5 days during the two week period. We have talked and are in the process of developing a plan to kick in by the end of June so stay tuned to follow this exciting...

A group of people, willing to help get the program on track made a site visit with Dona Ari, the coordinator of the program and had discussions with the Padre Manuel and a plan devised: Repair the gas leak in the tubing so the cooking can be done in the kitchen, • Replace the water pump with a larger, more serviceable one maybe 1 hp motor • Upgrade the electrical system Ensure the cleaning supplies are purchased in bulk sizes Ensure the kitchen has a regular supply of staples such as beans, rice, lentils, chicken caldo Ask the community for ongoing support with donations. We have met with the necessary people involved and have a plan and now this project is almost complete.  The daily resources needed to run this kitchen have been repaired and all systems are working. The intention now is to have the community donate the food stuffs so the volunteers are able to prepare the meals without worry. The Food Bank has committed to purchase a steady supply of staples for the next 6 month period thanks to generous donations from Food Bank supporters.  Thanks to all of you. Suzanne’s update on the project… Waves of joy swept over Dona Ari’s face. Her face lit up just like the lights that went on as an electrician moved room to room at La Casa de Cristiandad in Chicxulub to check the installation of a new circuit box. As each light went on her smile grew bigger and bigger. Then the water pump was re-connected and instantly started to fill the roof top tank, Dona Ari turned to volunteer, Jody (Josefina) Duncan hugged her and exclaimed,...
