National Volunteer Week (April 6-12, 2014) is a time to recognize, celebrate and thank Canada’s 13.3 million volunteers. Volunteers strengthen our communities and make our country vibrant.

The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, calls Canada “a smart and caring nation.” It’s our dedication to community involvement that has given us that reputation at home and around the globe.

Thank you for being a part of the volunteer team here in Chicxulub Puerto and for making a difference in the lives of people you come in contact with!

I have spent the past few weeks unpacking and sorting donations from all of you and have learned even more from you as I did so.

The knitters showed a new way of sorting pairs of slippers, returned knitting needles using wine corks as holders (works better than elastics).  The articles for next Christmas are lovely and will help keep everyone warm.

The baseball coaches sent photos of all the players having fun, including the moms and other community members who came out.

The men at the nursing home showed lots of smiles and laughter as they worked under the hot sun making it look better.

The women who were faithful to the nursing home exercise program brought smiles to all the residents faces who participated.

The English teachers had fun with the children and encouraged them over and over to be a success.

The packers and sorters who came out to the despensa days gave much of themselves in many ways.

The sponsors who brought things for their families experienced a new feeling when they received hugs and thanks from them.

The volunteers who participated in all the fund-raising initiatives brought new enthusiasm and ideas to the program.

Carmita who helps me every day is a godsend and loves meeting new friends!

All of you who helped in the preparation of the Christmas hampers and Children’s Christmas party enjoyed seeing the smiles Santa brought to the kids faces.

I want to say thank you for being you and bringing your helping spirit to make a difference to the folks in Chicxulub.
