The Uniform Project

uniform-01Finally the uniform project is well under way! A generous donation was sent to the Chicxulub Food Bank project earmarked for uniforms for the very poor children attending school in Chicxulub. The structure of the program and staff are now in place.

There are a total of 56 children requiring this assistance. They were chosen from families who receive no government help from a program called “Oportunidades”. The program is designed to encourage “recycling” of uniforms at the end of each school year.

The seamstress and tailor both live and work in Chicxulub Puerto. The children will visit the home and have their measurements recorded. Once the uniforms are complete the moms will pick up the uniform and keep for the school year. At the end of the term, the uniforms will be checked and added to the recycle “bin” for needs of the upcoming children.

The uniforms are made from selected material and colours and will cost for the boy’s uniform 100pesos and the girl’s uniform 150pesos. This year there are more girls than boys requiring assistance. The uniforms could be purchased in downtown Progreso for about the same money but this company is doing a good business and as you know I like to help the folks in Chicxulub succeed.

The material has been and will be bought in the fabric store in Progreso thus keeping the funds in our “adopted” home area.

The supplies purchased include metros of material for skirts, shirts, blouses and pants, 340 buttons, 6 cones of thread and 56 zippers. The place was hopping to get the purchases together.

This makes the project a win-win area for everyone involved.

Once again this project has been made possible by a generous donation to the Food Bank and the assistance of Carmita Pech.
