The Chix Food Bank relies on individual, corporate and foundation support to fund our hunger-relief efforts.
Chix Food Bank partners help us:
- Raise funds
- Secure and distribute food to hungry people in the region
- Raise awareness of the problem of hunger in Chicxulub
We would like to thank our partners for their financial support, food donations and outreach to help us end hunger in these small fishing villages.

Cruise Ship Program:
Who would have thought cruise ship passengers visiting the area would be interested in helping the less fortunate? Well, I have discovered many of the passengers on the Carnival ships coming to Puerto Progreso have shown that interest. The first family arrived from Kentucky in October 2007. The report they wrote on the cruise ship critic site opened the floodgates.
People from all over the States continue to donate school supplies and backpacks. The less fortunate kids receive these items in late August so they can start off their school year with a dream and the necessary supplies to achieve them.
If interested I send out a list of requested supplies and the folks bring them on their cruise. They are met where they get off the shuttle bus from the cruise ship to downtown Progreso and we take a local bus to the school, about 10 minutes away. At the school they meet the teachers, students and gain a better understanding of school life here. Then, if they wish, we do a walking tour of the village so they can see how the folks here live. This is often accompanied by discussions about housing and fresh water supply, things that we all take for granted. The group then returns to Progreso to continue their day’s visit.
