Yucatan receives a new shipment with 200,000 doses against the Coronavirus

Published 1 day ago  Jan 29, 2022

The new shipment arrived in the state this Friday for the application of the booster dose to the population between 40 and 59 years of age from municipalities in the interior of the state, which will be announced soon.

MÉRIDA.– More vaccines against the Coronavirus continue to arrive in Yucatan and this time a new shipment arrived in the state with 200,000 doses from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which will be used for the reinforcement application to people from 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years of age, in municipalities in the interior of the state that will be announced soon, reported the Ministry of Health (SSY).

The state agency explained that, in the following days, the municipalities, dates and modules that will be enabled for the administration of these doses will be announced, for which it invited the population in these age ranges to be aware of the Information to be provided through official channels.

At the instruction of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, the director of Prevention and Health Protection of the SSY, Carlos Isaac Hernández Fuentes, went to the Mérida International Airport «Manuel Crescencio Rejón», to supervise the arrival of this new shipment, which arrived at aboard a Mexican Air Force Boeing 737-200 aircraft, license plate 3520, from Mexico City, which touched down on state territory at 1:45 p.m.

Accompanied by the State Coordinator for Covid-19 Vaccination, Corvette Captain Carlos Gómez Montes de Oca, Hernández Fuentes verified the unloading of the batch, by Army personnel, which was placed in an SSY thermoking truck, for later transfer to the vaccine warehouse, from where these drugs will be distributed to the places where they will be applied.

To this day, more than 3 million 661,139 vaccines against the Coronavirus have arrived in the state, to which is added the batch of 200 thousand that the unit received this afternoon.

It should be reiterated that these vaccines will be applied to the population that, previously, has been registered and selected, through the platforms of the Government of the Republic, for which the Federation is in charge of the planning and protocols of this strategy, while that the State will be supporting with these tasks.

At the arrival of the new batch, the person in charge of Vaccination of the SSY, Alejandro Díaz Sánchez, the commander of the 11 Infantry Battalion, Colonel Gustavo Caratachea Esparza and the General of the Aviator Pilot Group José de Jesús Morán Gutiérrez, commander of the BAM were also present. .

January 30, 2022 COVID Update for Yucatan – COVID Cases Still Increasingby yucalandiaJan 30, 2022The latest facts say it’s time to continue to be vigilant across Yucatan. We had a troubling 38% increase in COVID cases this past week (Sunday 1/23 – Sat 1/29), as COVID hospitalizations are also peaking to record levels this past Wednesday.Because most people who get COVID do not get tested & their cases are not reported to the Government, there were likely just over 90,000 COVID cases across Yucatan this past week. This means that 1 in every 25 Yucatecans you meet in a week have an active COVID infection => a very troubling number.Conslusions? … We must continue to be diligent in wearing tight-fitting masks**, Socially Distancing of 8 ft indoors with masks-off (to eat & drink), and 6 ft of distancing when there are breezes or a fan … diluting out the highly-infectious invisible fine aerosols from people talking.**We must also THROW AWAY all cloth masks right now, because they leak a disastrous 40% – 70%, which puts both the wearer and other people at risk.Progress of the latest COVID wave of cases:
According to official Yucatan reports of weekly COVID cases going back to Dec 15’th, beginning with a low low 84 cases, then 481 , then 1,463, then 2,952, … 5,425, and now 7,526 cases this past week.COVID hospitalizations are overwhelming our hospitals, with a record-breaking hospitalizations this past week, peaking at 202 ICU hospitalizations in our public hospitals on Wednesday … And sadly, COVID deaths for Yucatan now total 6603, with 57 newly reported deaths for this past week.Delta variant is still our dominant strain:
Over the past weeks, the Omicron variant has produced 18% just of the official COVID-19 variants, with Delta still being the dominant strain. The increase in the COVID wave is slowing:
The weekly percentage increases in this recent big continuing wave of COVID cases have been: 345%, 204%, 101%, 84%, and now 38% => so the rate of increase is not as wicked, but a 38% INCREASE is still troublingLocation of COVID cases:
Merida has the largest total cumulative number of weekly cases in Yucatan with 60,422 official COVID cases. Within Merida, the largest number of cases have been in Zona Norte at 14,798. On a colonia basis, Colonia Centro has the most with 5558 cases. The Yucatan Beach (Gulf Coast of Yucatan (from Chuburna to inlet near Telchac Puerto) had 208 new COVID-19 cases this week, down from 302 last week. This was the third highest number of cases for any week of the pandemic. So … BE VIGILANT … COVID cases are still rising substantially here (38% more this week) …Keep wearing only tight-fitting medical grade masks (KF94 or KN95, or N95) … Keep Socially distancing by 8 ft with masks off indoors …. and THROW AWAY your cloth masks, because they leak a disastrous 40%-70%.Stay informed … Stay healthy … Stay safe …Dr. Steven M. More infections by Omicron in Progress

This is the medical report for this Saturday, January 22:

The Yucatan Ministry of Health (SSY) recommends that the Yucatecan population avoid the use of cloth face masks or scarves since it is described that it DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY PROTECTION AGAINST the Omicron variant, so, to protect us all, the use is suggested. of two-layer, three-layer or medical-grade face masks such as KN95, since these have up to 95% coverage against Omicron.

This Friday a new shipment arrived in Yucatan with 240,000 vaccines from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which will be destined for the application of the booster dose to the population sectors of 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years of age who live in Mérida, reported the Ministry of Health (SSY).

Similarly, the application of the booster dose against the Coronavirus continues to the population sectors of 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years of age in 26 municipalities in the interior of the state, a process that will take place on January 24 for both sectors. population, that is, people from 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years old, only in the demarcations of Kanasín, Valladolid, Tizimín, Progreso, Tekax and Ticul.

Likewise, Yucatecan adolescents from 15 to 17 years of age from 37 municipalities in the interior of the state, will receive from Monday, January 24 to Friday, January 28, the second dose against the Coronavirus, a phase with which vaccination in the entity continues to advance at a good pace. .

Also teachers, teachers and active educational personnel from public and private schools in the state who for some reason could not receive their booster dose against the Coronavirus, will have a new opportunity to get vaccinated through an extraordinary vaccination day ordered by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal , which will take place next Tuesday, January 25, and whose only venue will be the Macrocentro set up in the Yucatán Siglo XXI Convention Center, from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

Omicron strain now dominant in Yucatán

ByCarlos Rosado van der GrachtJanuary 17, 2022

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 now appears to be the most common form of the virus in Yucatán.

Though on average, symptoms resulting from the Omicron variant tends to be less severe, health authorities in Yucatán are warning the public to not become complacent.

COVID-19 infections have surged since the beginning of 2022, bringing an increase in hospitalizations and deaths.

“It is important that we do not let our guard down at this critical time. Despite the success of the vaccination program, it’s important to ensure that we continue to obey all health protocols,” said the state’s health secretary, Mauricio Sauri Vivas.

But recent studies and reports from South Africa suggest that the surge of the Omicron strain of the COVID-19 virus may in fact bring with it a silver lining.

“The surge of the fast-spreading Omicron variant in Africa appears to have peaked and is flattening in most African countries as immunity in the population appears to be increasing,” reported South Africa’s national news service.

Earlier: Yucatán’s COVID hospitalizations begin to creep up

Some epidemiologists are suggesting that the trend seen in South Africa is likely to be replicated in other regions around the world, including Mexico — yet others remain cautious in making such optimistic forecasts.

Though COVID-19 vaccinations are not 100% effective in preventing infection, they have proven extremely successful in mitigating symptoms and preventing hospitalization, a fact which appears to remain true for the Omicron variant.

To date, Yucatán has received nearly 3.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, making it per capita one of the most vaccinated states in the country.

Vaccinations continue across the state with residents between 15 and 18 scheduled to get their second dose this week across several municipalities.

An additional lot of 50,000 vaccines also arrived during the weekend to offer booster shots to people in their 40s in rural Yucatán. Health authorities have not yet announced when the booster shot will be offered to this same cohort in Mérida, but an announcement is expected within the next month.

Key Component of Network Security in 2022

ByYucatan Times on January 18, 2022

With the global coronavirus pandemic seemingly moving towards the beginning of its end, or at least potentially migrating to an endemic status, many working environments have changed. Homeworking has undeniable become more popular as many employees need more flexible working hours and locations.

These demands pose added calls on IT Security Professionals, whose job is to ensure that company networks are secure and that vulnerabilities are identified and remedied. In parallel, they must enable remote workers to have access to the information and systems they need to get their work done.

In 2020, when the pandemic broke out, remote working was quickly enabled by enabling Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and/or remote access applications. In 2021, cloud adoption increased with reports of over 80% of UK businesses migrating at least one application or a part of their infrastructure to cloud infrastructure.

With no sign of this trend abating, 2022 is a suitable time to consolidate this position and review network security options to ensure your setup is as tight as a camel’s nostril in a sandstorm. Here are some suggestions.

Firewalls and DNS

  • Regularly check TLS certificates and/or sign up to a certification management service like AWS’s Certificate Manager, which enables easy provision, management, and deployment of public and private Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) certificates.
  • Migrate all browser-based traffic from ports 80 to 443, including internal traffic, to ensure all data is secured and encrypted in transit.
  • Investigate and apply Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW), which is natively application-aware, and makes decisions based on application, user, and content – unlike its precursor, UTM (Unified Threat Management).

EDR and SIEM

  • EDR solutions (Endpoint Detection and Response*) go beyond traditional, reactive security systems, which tend to be detection-based. Instead, EDR systems supply security analysts the tools that they need to identify threats proactively and therefore protect their organizations; ensure you have one in place!
  • SIEM systems supply real-time analysis of security alerts generated by applications and/or network hardware. SIEM systems are provided as software, appliances, or managed services; and are used for logging security data and generating reports for security compliance purposes. SIEM and EDR complement each other.

* Note that an ‘Endpoint’ refers to and end-user devices like desktops, laptops, and mobile devices in this scenario, rather than a REST API, which is also known as an endpoint.

IPS

  • Intrusion Prevention Systems examine network traffic to detect and prevent vulnerability exploits. For example, a malicious application that is trying to gain access or disrupt data using SQL Injection (SQLI) via a webform or an API request. This is a serious and common threat, and software you supply and use must be checked. Otherwise, you risk a serious outage at best and catastrophic data deletion at worst.
  • Denial of Service attacks (DoS or DDoS if distributed) target specific applications and grind them to a halt by overloading with repeated, sustained requests. The best defense is a distributed approach to networking and application presentation. This may include multiple system interconnections, multiple cloud infrastructures and/or a hybrid approach.

The start of a new year is traditionally a time of taking stock, so use it wisely by checking your networking components and removing any vulnerabilities.

Chicxulub to get its very own ‘Jurassic Park’

ByCarlos Rosado van der GrachtJanuary 12, 2022 Share.

A large statue of a dinosaur stands in wait for more of its kind outside Chicxulub. Photo: Courtesy

Construction began today at a new attraction near the entrance to Chicxulub, in the municipality of Progreso.

The new park, named “Sendero Jurásico”, or “Jurassic Path,” is planned to cover an area roughly a kilometer long.

It will feature large images — likely statues — of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, as well as information regarding the extinction-level event that took place in Chicxulub, roughly 65 million years ago.

When exactly this “Jurassic Park” will open to the public is still unknown, but local officials say it will be full of attraction for the entire family. Photo: Courtesy

The crater has a diameter of over 180 kilometers, and it is believed that the heat produced by the impact liquified the ground and created the network of cenotes for which Yucatán is famous.

“The idea behind this park is to tell the world about what happened here 65 million years ago, as well as to attract tourism and stimulate the local economy,” said Progreso Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi.

Earlier: Residents see little gain from famous Chicxulub Crater

Progreso recently completed the construction of another similar attraction, a museum located across from the port city’s boardwalk called “El Museo del Meteorito,” or “Meteorite Museum.”

Though complete, Progreso’s Meteorite Museum remains closed out of concerns of the rising numbers of COVID-19 infections in the region: Photo: Carlos Rosado van der Gracht

The museum, which has not yet opened to the public, is reported to be full of effigies of dinosaurs, exotic plants, fossils, and information kiosks about the Yucatán’s prehistoric past.

Because of its great size, and the fact that much of it is underwater, the crater is impossible to observe with the naked eye. However, researchers since the 1970s have studied its composition for clues regarding the world-shaking event.

Scientists maintain that the force of the explosion must have released energy over a billion times higher than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Daily Coronavirus report in the Yucatán related to THURSDAY 13 JANUARY 2022.
Given the yellow change in the state epidemiological traffic light due to the increase in coronavirus cases in the entity, the Yucatan Health Secretary announces that, as a preventive measure, the date of opening mass events is postponed until the 15th of February.Similarly, the state dependency pointed out that the use of mouth covers is mandatory, even in vaccinated people, and it is recommended to wear masks that are two-layer, tricap, or KN95, not of cloth or sponge, as they do not protect from the strain Omicron. People who haven’t received the vaccine, are invited to protect us among all and come to get vaccinated.Stopping infections is the responsibility of everyone, so the Yucatán Health Secretary urges the population to continue preventive measures and not lower guard against the Coronavirus pandemic, as, to continue to increase contagions, restrictive measures will be taken again. As it has been pointed out, in the economic re-opening the most important data are hospital occupation and daily income. Today we have 78 patients in public hospitals.71,539 patients have already recovered: they show no symptoms or can infect. This figure represents 88% of the total registered infections, which is 81,451.In the last 24 hours, 3 people died and 459 new Coronavirus infections were detected.

THE WEEKLY INDICATORS OF THE STATE HEALTH TRAFFIC LIGHT ARE GREEN.

new stoplight map

Thirteen of Mexico’s 32 states are high risk orange or medium risk yellow on the federal government’s latest coronavirus stoplight map, while active case numbers are at an all-time high as the highly infectious omicron strain spreads rapidly.

There are three orange states on the new map – which takes effect Monday and will remain in force through January 23, 10 are painted yellow and 19 are low risk green.

Tamaulipas and Baja California Sur jumped to orange from green while Chihuahua regressed to that color from yellow.

The yellow states are Aguascalientes, Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Colima, Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Sinaloa, Durango and Zacatecas. The first three were already yellow while the last seven switched to yellow from green.

The updated map is indicative of a coronavirus situation that has deteriorated quickly in recent days – at least in terms of new infections. There were no orange states on the previous map and just four yellow ones.

The Health Ministry reported more than 20,000 new cases on each of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week before the daily tally exceeded 30,000 for the first time ever on Saturday.

An additional 30,671 confirmed infections on Saturday and 11,599 on Sunday lifted Mexico’s accumulated case tally to 4.12 million. There are currently 158,332 estimated active cases across the country, more than at any other time of the pandemic.

Baja California has the highest number of active cases on a per capita basis followed by Mexico City, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas.

The official COVID-19 death toll passed 300,000 on Friday and now stands at 300,334, the fifth highest total in the world.

An average of 16,185 cases were reported per day during the first nine days of January – a whopping 446% increase compared to the daily average in December, but fatalities have declined almost 40% to an average of 101 per day.

The sharp increase in new cases – the majority are presumed to be omicron infections –  has not translated into a significant increase in hospitalizations, with just 19% of general care COVID beds and 12% of those with ventilators occupied as of Friday.

covid-19

However, occupancy rates are much higher in some states such as Quintana Roo and Baja California, where more than 60% of general care beds are taken. Aguascalientes has the highest occupancy rate for beds with ventilators, with 59% currently in use.

In other COVID-19 news:

• There has been a slight increase in hospitalizations in Mexico City, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said Sunday.

However, the pressure on the health system in the capital is much lower than that exerted during the second and third waves of infections, she said.

The mayor said the high vaccination rate in Mexico City and  the characteristics of the omicron variant – which causes less severe disease – have helped keep hospitalizations low compared to previous waves.

There were just under 700 patients in COVID wards in Mexico City hospitals on Saturday, of whom 134 were in intensive care. Federal data shows that 37% of general care beds and 10% of those with ventilators are occupied in the capital.

Coronavirus spokesman Eduardo Clark said that 70% of hospitalized patients are not vaccinated. He also said that it’s not “exceedingly necessary” for people with COVID-like symptoms to get tested.

“People with symptoms have to isolate themselves, getting tested is not necessary. If we have any respiratory symptom, we should assume that it’s COVID, go home and stay isolated for seven days,” Clark said.

Sheinbaum made similar remarks, asserting that “it’s not necessary to go and get tested at this time.”

Their advice comes as demand for COVID testing soars across the country.

• Mayor Sheinbaum announced that booster shots for adults aged 50 to 59 will be available in Mexico City from January 18.

The federal government started offering booster shots to people aged 60 and over last month, but seniors are still waiting for them in some parts of the country.

People aged 40 and over can register to receive a booster shot on the government’s vaccination website.

• Mexico has recorded its first confirmed case of “flurona” – a concurrent infection with COVID-19 and influenza. The case was detected in a 28-year-old woman in Tepic, Nayarit, state Health Minister José Munguía said.

• President López Obrador said he would get tested for COVID after waking up “hoarse” on Monday morning.

“I woke up hoarse, I’m going to get tested later but I think it’s the flu,” he told reporters at his regular news conference.

López Obrador acknowledged Friday that he had been in contact with Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier, who announced earlier the same day that she had tested positive.

Yucatecan municipalities of Telchac and Progreso start 2022 with violent acts

ByYucatan Times on January 7, 2022

Two Allegedly Criminal Acts That Occurred In Telchac Pueblo And In Progreso, Yucatán, Lit The Warning Lights About Insecurity.

MÉRIDA, Yucatan, (January 7 2022) .- Two allegedly criminal acts that occurred in Telchac Pueblo and in Progreso, Yucatán, set off the red alerts about insecurity due to possible femicide, and a shooting in the port of Progreso.

The death of a young woman in a house in the Santa Rosa de Telchac Pueblo neighborhood is being investigated since her relatives suspect that it is a case of femicide.

The woman’s body was found dead in a property on Calle 25 between 10 and 12 in that neighborhood. His body was hung from a hammock.

When the authorities arrived, they confirmed that she had no vital signs, although family and friends believe that behind his death would be the young woman’s sentimental partner, identified as “Minimí”, who is a fugitive.

In social networks, they urged the authorities to investigate and clarify the facts, considering that it may be another case of femicide.

Men On Motorbike Shoot Down Property

Also, in the port of Progreso, two men on a motorcycle fired gunshots at a property and although there were no losses of human life, a dog was killed by the bullets.

A dog was killed by gunshots in Progreso. (Photo: social networks)

Both events occur after an overturned truck was found on the Mérida-Cancún highway, near Valladolid, and inside it was the body of a man who was killed by a gunshot to the head.

Apparently, he was a drug dealer and was originally from Veracruz.

All these events lit the warning lights in Yucatan during this first week of the new year 2022.

In the case of the shooting in Progreso, the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) installed a preventive operation in that port and part of the eastern coast of the State.

Regarding the case of the young woman’s murder, her relatives did not accept the version of the presumed suicide and considered she could be the victim of femicide by her sentimental partner who constantly – they say – gave her mistreatment and frequent beatings.

PROGRESS.- After the new violent events registered yesterday, where subjects on a motorcycle shot a property in the Benito Juárez García neighborhood, without having been arrested so far, the General Secretary of the PRI in Yucatán and former local deputy, Lila Frías Castillo, expressed His concern when pointing out that what is happening in Progreso today is a real threat to the families of the port and it is urgent that the authorities take action on the matter.
Yesterday, as we reported, there was extensive police mobilization in the east of the port, after neighbors reported a shooting in a property in the area.
The events occurred shortly before 9 am on Calle 24 between 27 and 29, in the Benito Juárez neighborhood, where it was found that some individuals on a motorcycle fired a firearm at a property.
After the shooting, it was reported that there were no injuries, but the bullets hit a pet who died shortly after.
As it transpired, the attackers were after the occupant of the aforementioned property, with whom they have pending accounts, but they did not find him on the site.

THREAT TO FAMILIES…
Through their social networks, the PRI politician, who lost in the elections to Julián Zacarías Curi, who won re-election, published: «I have said it ad nauseam as a citizen, since the congress and for many political processes, Progreso went from being a warning on the issue of security to today being a real threat to families.
Lila Frías also indicated that “the support of a good community, a good place for tourists, a privileged area for certain industries and businesses has to be the basis of everything security,” he added.
The former director of the Tecnológico de Progreso also pointed out that “… and although it bothers and I understand that it bothers them because they are fragile to criticism because their makeup (makeup to the Port) is running, the state and municipal authorities are responsible for taking actions and protect citizens, they are owed ”.
Finally, the PRI policy pointed out that: “As citizens we take precautions, sadly Progreso has changed and not for the good of the Progreseños.”

DEEP CONCERN…
It is important to point out that the recent violent events are generating deep concern among the inhabitants, as it is the second case of firearm attack registered in the year 2022 that begins. On January 1, in another event, a subject fired at two others in the west of the city and a young man was injured with a knife at Rancho San Pedro.
The foregoing without counting the wave of robberies to local properties and businesses that have been registered in recent days, without any arrests so far.
The events recorded yesterday also affect the tourist industry, as they occurred precisely on the day that Progreso received two cruise ships simultaneously: the Carnival Brezze and the World Voyager, whose tourists roamed the streets of the port.
Inhabitants have even pointed out that the Secretary of Public Security, Commander General Commissioner Luis Felipe Saidén Ojeda, intervenes in Progreso to reinforce security, since the head of the municipal corporation, Emilio Caamal Gutiérrez, is not providing the desired results. (ProgresoHoy.com)

Progreso’s increases are the lowest since last March, but hovering towards 2,000! Suspected cases in the state are dropping slightly with an increase of 6,227 new cases. Sadly, 461 new deaths were recorded this month. The majority of deaths are still attributed to unvaccinated persons, although the FIRST case of Omicron was just recorded in Merida in a 35 y/o male who had travelled to Mexico City. He was doubly vaccinated!!! NEWS JUST IN – 13 cases of Omicron recorded this date!

Some cases of COVID have been recorded amongst vaccinated individuals, but I am not seeing exact numbers. The mask mandate is still in place, yet one still sees tourists in Merida without masks and a few in Progreso, especially on cruise ship days. Yes, Yucatan is still allowing cruise ships and supposedly vaccinated cruisers, but not unvaccinated children!

Everything is still pretty much open for business, including bars with music. The annual Merida Fest is set to begin in early January with concerts, etc. Saturday evening events are being held on the boardwalk in Progreso. The Full Moon Jazz Festival is still anticipated, as is the My Sister’s Closet Fashion Show on January 20th at Emily’s Sala de Fiesta.

Early December saw seniors 60 and over receiving an AstraZeneca booster. Teenagers are in the process of getting their second vaccination in many communities, including Progreso. Children are still not being vaccinated except those with immune problems.

Yucatan COVID Updates for the 2022 New Yearby yucalandiaJan 2, 2022I’m writing this morning’s report with a bit of sadness, because COVID cases are spiking up again in Merida & Yucatan, as a result of all the snow-birds returning and the recent Christmas season …  +plus a sprinking (13) of Omicron cases. The COVID case data is in for the most recent Friday (Dec 25’th) – Saturday (Jan 2)  period … and the trends look bad. …  Overall … Delta COVID cases increased a shocking 345% increase this past week … hitting 481 cases for the week for the State of Yucatan, with the vast majority of cases happening in Merida. For comparison … Just two weeks ago we had the lowest-ever 83 cases for the entire week.
In contrast, yesterday (Saturday) alone we had same number of 176 cases as the previous 2 weeks total combined. Overall, Yucatan’s case numbers are STILL RELATIVELY LOW … for now .., which means you would have to encounter 4800 Yucatecans in a week, to find one with an active COVID infection.Still, this past weeks’ increases of 78% more hospital COVID treatments and over 4X more positive case rates (35% of Yucatecans tested had COVID) – makes it time to re-evaluate going out & about without masks to eat in public.** For everyone’s benefit, the big increases in the 3 big data points (345% more cases, 4X more positives, & 78% more COVID hospital treatments) are very strong proofs that there is a huge surge of COVID cases looming for January & February. The COVID case numbers are still CURRENTLY VERY LOW – at safe levels.Specifically, because 97% of COVID cases are infectious for 7 days, the weekly case reports are significant:
There were 481 new cases for this past week … yet each day brought significantly larger numbers than the previous day, giving us the largest weekly % increase for for the entire pandemic. Only two weeks ago we had only 83 cases for the entire week, yet, yesterday, Saturday alone had 176 new cases. Conclusions:
~ This current previous week’s case TOTAL numbers were still relatively VERY LOW – 481 cases per week – where 400 cases a week have been our typical low-levels here in Yucatan.~ The current rate of 1 Yucatecan COVID case per 4,800 Yucatecans is still stunningly low compared to the USA & Canada . .~ In addition to the near 400% increase in new COVID-19 cases this past week, COVID hospital treatments of patients spiked by 78% in public hospitals.~ COVID hospitalizations (overnight stays) in public hospitals increased 48% from 23 cases on Saturday Jan 25’th…. to 34 cases on Saturday (Jan 1).~ COVID-19 testing showed quite low 8.1% rates of positive tests just two weeks ago. Yet, this week’s percentage of positive cases spiked over 4X to 35%.Again … These last 5 big data points are very strong indicators that there is a huge surge looming for January – even without Omicron -Stay informed … Stay healthy … Stay safe …Best Wishes for Better New Year,

Yucatan starts 2022 with violence

ByYucatan Times on January 2, 2022

On the first day of 2022, violence occurred in various parts of the state. The SSP reports injuries, deaths, and shootings at the beginning of the year.

(YUCATAN Mexico – SSP) – In a rare situation for a usually peaceful state, the beginning of the year 2022 in Yucatán was notoriously violent, according to the official report issued by the Secretariat of Public Security.

A total of three people were injured by gunfire in the port of Progreso. The perpetrator of the attack was detained by the authorities, while the three injured had to be taken to hospitals.

In addition, a pickup truck overturned on the federal free highway Merida-Cancun, Xcalacoop-Piste section. A man was found dead inside. The wrecked vehicle had license plates from Quintana Roo. SSP agents and elements of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) worked in coordination with the State Investigation Police.

The truck had two holes in one of its windows. The FGE specialists will be in charge of determining if they were caused by accident or if they were, as has been speculated, gunshot wounds.

Stabbing in Kanasín
The SSP reported that in the early hours of New Year’s day, a man was stabbed in the Villas de Oriente subdivision of Kanasín.

The victim was a drunk 28-year-old man injured with a knife in the abdomen while burning fireworks. The aggressor had previous problems with the victim. The injured person had to be taken to a hospital.

Injured with machete
The SSP also reported that in Chacsinkín, three people drinking alcoholic beverages suffered machete injuries inflicted by an individual who the neighbors recognize by the nickname of “Bryan.” However, with wounds to the head, face, and arms, the victims refused to identify him and said that they would not file a complaint.

In Tixcacalcupul, municipality of Yaxcabá, a 28-year-old man in a drunken state said that he was beaten with a pipe by two others, whom he will report, and had to be treated by paramedics for the injuries suffered.

In Villas de Umán, an alcoholic man suffered several injuries with a sharp object. He said he did not remember who or where he was assaulted.

In the Benito Juarez neighborhood of Progreso, a 26-year-old man was injured with a knife by acquaintances with whom he was drinking alcoholic beverages. He did not specify the characteristics of his alleged attackers.

New Year’s Eve operation
Concerning the SSP’s operation, four people were detained for drunk driving. In addition, the SSP installed 17 traffic filters and three-speed bumps on the Periferico and avenues of Merida. As a result, 68,581 vehicles were registered, of which 35,000 were on the Periferico.

The Ambulance Unit of the SSP reported that it attended 86 requests throughout the city.

Among them, 40 transfers to hospitals stand out, 11 for traffic incidents (including those that occurred on federal highways and in municipalities), 6 for motorcycle skidding, 5 for fireworks injuries, 2 for falls, 1 for smoke intoxication, and 13 for various pathologies.

In the case of those injured by fireworks, six males between 40 and 17 years of age had firecrackers explode near their faces, causing various injuries. The most delicate case is that of a 32-year-old man, to whom a “mortar” burst, causing him a fractured nasal septum and third-degree burns to his face and neck. Another, 40 years old, suffered second-degree burns to his face and eye damage due to the explosion.

As for the work of the SSP firefighters, they attended four traffic incidents, seven gas leaks, six property fires, two vehicle fires, and 17 brush fires.

Deaths in Merida
The SSP also reported a “hit and run” of a man, approximately 48 years of age in a motorcycle, at the Libélulas area west of Mérida. After the accident, the man was left lying in the brush on the side of the road next to his vehicle, a red Suzuki motorcycle.

In addition, a 30-year-old man driving a Voyager on Correa Rachó Avenue lost control of the vehicle, crossed the curb, went up onto the sidewalk, and struck a concrete structure. He died at the scene.

Mérida gets its first marijuana cafe, but will it last?

ByCarlos Rosado van der GrachtDecember 31, 2021

During the evenings, Camaleón hosts musicians and other entertainers to help get the party going. Photo: Courtesy

Camaleón stocks most of the usual fare you would come to expect from a cafe in Mérida’s Centro, but there is one big difference —  marijuana.

As selling marijuana is still a felony, visitors to the cafe are encouraged to bring their own to enjoy along with the other offerings, including cake, coffee, and pan dulce.

To be able to smoke cannabis at Camaleón, patrons must sign a document attesting to the fact that they are at least 18 years old and that what they are smoking belongs to them.

It’s not clear if it is possible to purchase cannabis at the cafe itself. Jars containing several varieties of the drug, marijuana-infused edibles, as well as bongs, and other paraphernalia, are on display. This ambiguity appears to be intentional.

Although the legal status of marijuana remains ambiguous, Mexico’s supreme court recently ruled to undo a series of laws prohibiting its use.

The move comes after a 2018 ruling that found banning cannabis violated Mexicans’ constitutional rights. The court instructed legislators to create a legal framework to regulate the production and consumption of marijuana no later than April 30, 2021.

Earlier: Pro-marijuana activists protest law by planting cannabis in Mérida park

But as lawmakers have failed to deliver such legislation, cannabis now exists in legal limbo, neither fully illegal nor legal.

Though the consumption of cannabis has increased in Yucatán over the past decade, there is still a great deal of social stigma associated with the drug.

“What we are offering here is a safe space to enjoy your marijuana in a safe environment and without prejudice,” said Camaleón co-owner, Carmen Uc.

If the proprietors of Camaleón are indeed selling marijuana, they are opening themselves up to prosecution, as no legal framework for its commercialization exists in Mexico. Photo: Courtesy

The proprietors say that the business is inspired by the cannabis cafes that began to pop up in Amsterdam in the 1970s when rules regarding the consumption of marijuana began to be relaxed in the Netherlands.

Camaleón Cafe is on Calle 55, on the corner of 44 and 46, in Mérida’s Centro. The shop is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

New residents in Yucatán flock to the beach

ByCarlos Rosado van der GrachtDecember 30, 2021

Demand for properties along Yucatán’s coast continues to grow, but so do prices. Photo: Carlos Rosado van der Gracht

The real-estate market on Yucatán’s coastline continues to heat up as a growing number of people from across the country and the world continue to buy up properties.

The increase in demand for properties at the beach is fueled at least in part by the oversaturation of the market in large retirement communities in Baja California Sur and Florida.

The number of beach-facing homes in Yucatán is now estimated to be approximately 12,000 — though the total is much higher when one includes properties slightly further inland.

The demand is fueled largely by both Mexicans and foreign nationals looking to buy a second home, especially people looking for a more laid-back lifestyle.

“I had been dreaming about living out at the beach for a while and just decided to go for it. Progreso is nicer than ever and being able to walk my dogs on the Malecon every morning feels like a dream come true,” said Laura Sánchez, a recent transplant from Mérida to Progreso.

But as the demand for homes at the beach increases, so have prices and rents — leaving many people from Yucatán’s coastal communities priced out of the market.

Though beach towns like Sisal and Celestun continue to grow in popularity, communities with better infrastructure and closer to Mérida like Chelem, Chicxulub, Telchac, and Progreso are gaining even more traction.

Earlier: Should Yucatán develop its very own Cancún-like hotel zone?

The municipal governments of these communities have taken notice and begun to invest in improvements to public spaces including parks and boardwalks.

This is especially true in Progreso, where the city government has redesigned its once crumbling boardwalk and set up several new attractions and facilities, including infrastructure allowing people with disabilities to enjoy the ocean.

Closing Progreso’s boardwalk to motor vehicles was a logical move and has greatly increased safety according to the local government. Photo: Carlos Rosado van der Gracht

The beach itself is also looking better than ever. Teams of municipal workers can be seen early in the morning raking the sand for garbage left on the beach, as well as excess seaweed.

Private investors have also caught on and opened a series of high-end restaurants tailored to tourists and people coming in from Mérida for a bite to eat and a swim.

The number of cruise ships arriving at Progreso has also begun to slowly trend upwards after a disastrous 16 months when not a single ship arrived due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

“Progreso and its surrounding communities are now more attractive than ever to investors, it is our job to continuously improve and bring more and better jobs to the area,” said Progreso Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi.
