Strategic alliance strengthened with the Port of Panama City, Florida
A joint agenda will be promoted to share experiences and contribute to the development and competitiveness of Puerto Progreso.

March 22, 2025 Progress Today

Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena held a meeting with authorities from the Port of Panama City, Florida, in the United States, with whom he agreed to strengthen cooperative ties between the port and the Port of Progreso in order to boost the growth and competitiveness of both port terminals and, consequently, their respective districts.
Accompanied by the head of the Ministry of Economy and Labor (SETY), Ermilo Barrera Novelo, the state governor received Becca Hardin, CEO of the Bay Economic Development Alliance, and Alex King, executive director of Panama City Port. They expressed their intention to exchange experiences and explore areas of opportunity that will contribute to the growth of the Port of Progreso and its transformation into a border port with the east coast of the United States.
In his address, the head of the state’s Executive Branch affirmed that this dialogue will help strengthen commercial connections and the more than 20-year-long relationship between both ports, thus consolidating Yucatán and Florida as strategic districts in their respective countries.
Díaz Mena emphasized that his administration is forward-thinking. Thanks to the support of President Claudia Sheinbaum, projects are being promoted to improve Yucatán’s capabilities and encourage its development, such as the expansion and modernization of the Progreso Deep-Sea Port and the project to bring the Umán Maya Train to that point on the Yucatecan coast.
“Right now, we have everything we need to join forces and establish a relationship that allows us to share our experiences and grow together,” stated the Governor.
Finally, the state leader expressed his interest in learning more about the Port of Panama City, Florida, especially on issues related to its operations, infrastructure, and processes.
The Va y Ven route has been modified, leaving police stations in Progreso without transportation.
AFFECTING HUNDREDS OF USERS IN PARAÍSO, FLAMBOYANES, AND SAN IGNACIO, IT WILL NO LONGER REACH THE POLICE STATIONS IN PROGRESO March 20, 2025

PROGRESO – Ten months after the Va y Ven system began operating in Progreso, serving the communities of Paraíso, Flamboyanes, and San Ignacio, the Yucatán Transportation Agency (ATY) announced this afternoon that it has decided to modify route #402, which would leave users in those communities without transportation service.
The measure, announced this afternoon by the ATY through its social media channels, has generated a wave of complaints and discontent, as it will affect hundreds of users, workers, students, and the general public in those communities.
The route modification was announced at 6:24 p.m. this Thursday, prompting Progreso users to express their discontent, as they will now be forced to travel to Progreso to board a bus or minibus to Mérida.
Until today’s change, the Va y Ven buses passed through the aforementioned communities and dropped off passengers at the Plaza The Harbor bus stop, where they could board another bus to continue their journey.
10 MONTHS OF SERVICE…
The route was modified today, after 10 months of relatively efficient operation, at least fulfilling what users were demanding: reaching Mérida more directly, without having to travel to Progreso first. The
route officially started on May 25, 2024, and was announced at the time as a “fulfilled commitment” by then-PAN mayor Julián Zacarías Curi, who announced it on his social media.
Users have already confirmed the route modification through the Va y Ven (Va y Ven) application (AAP), which indicates that they have been removed from the route.
This announcement has generated controversy, especially because Progreso users in general demand better transportation service, since the Autoprogreso company and the buses, as they have pointed out on numerous occasions, offer poor quality service and, in the case of buses, frequently remain stranded in the middle of the road, affecting students and workers who do not arrive on time to their destinations. Users are also demanding that current Mayor Erik Rihani González take the necessary steps to restore this service. (ProgresoHoy.com)

Bullfighting season canceled at Merida’s Plaza de Toros Yucatán Magazine February 17, 2025
Bullfighting at Plaza de Toros Mérida has come to an abrupt halt, shorting the 2024-25 season by two events.
Just days before what would have been the fifth event of the series, Toros Yucatan announced in a statement that they were ending the season due to causas de fuerza mayor.
Sunday’s event was set to feature four toreros and eight bulls from two prestigious ranches — Barralva and Ordaz. The lineup included Spanish horseback bullfighter Andy Cartagena, alongside matadors Juan Pablo Sánchez, Spanish-born Román Collado, and Sergio Flores. However, part of the bull lineup failed to receive approval from authorities due to insufficient size and physical condition requirements.
Toros Yucatan has announced that they will provide refunds for tickets purchased for Sunday’s event. Ticket holders can claim their refunds starting Monday, Feb. 17, at the Plaza de Toros box office located on Reforma Avenue.
Bullfighting Controversy
The cancelation comes amid ongoing debates about bullfighting in Mexico. While Mérida has maintained a strong bullfighting tradition, several Mexican states have banned the practice in recent years. Mexico City’s historic Plaza México, the world’s largest bullring, faced a temporary suspension of activities in 2022 due to legal challenges from animal rights activists.
Yucatán, however, has historically defended bullfighting as part of its cultural heritage, with the Plaza de Toros being a significant venue since its construction in the early 20th century. The practice remains legal in the state despite growing opposition from animal rights groups who argue against what they consider animal cruelty. Supporters, meanwhile, defend it as an important cultural tradition that contributes to the local economy and maintains historical ties with Spain.
The current cancellation, while attributed to technical issues with the bulls rather than regulatory pressure, adds another chapter to the ongoing discussion about the future of bullfighting in Mexico, where tradition and animal rights concerns increasingly clash.

Before Juan González Flores, country manager of International Finance Corporation Mexico, Díaz Mena presented the competitive advantages of Yucatan, as well as the large strategic projects that seek to boost the state’s economy and generate more well-being for the Yucatecans. He detailed that in Yucatan they are working on the expansion of the Deepwater Port of Progreso; the project to bring the Maya Train to Progreso, as well as the Well-Being Poles with natural gas.
“We have the promotion of clean energy; we promote wind energy projects, photovoltaic energy, which can complement what the combined cycle plants will be producing in electricity for Yucatan,” he added.

Mexico ‘closes’ statue of Greek god of sea because it offends indigenous groups
A 10ft-tall statue of the Greek god of the sea erected in Mexico has been “closed” and could be removed altogether because it offends the beliefs of local indigenous groups.

The statue depicts a trident-wielding Poseidon appearing to rise from the sea metres from the beach near the town of Progreso, Yucatan.
But Mexico’s environmental protection agency said the statue lacked permits and it was symbolically “closed” on Thursday after a group of activist lawyers filed a legal complaint saying the statue of the Greek god offended the beliefs of local Maya indigenous groups who have their own god of water, Chaac.
“Poseidon is a Greek god who is alien to our Maya culture,” the legal complaint filed against the statue says.
“I have a human right for my Maya culture to be preserved.”
Carlos Morales, whose Indigenous Strategic Litigation group brought the complaint, told the Associated Press he wants the statue removed “because it is foreign to the Maya culture, and because it did not meet the requirements” of getting an environmental permit.
Under Mexican law, any building project that could alter the ecosystem must file impact statements and receive approval.
Typically, Mexico’s environmental protection agency issues a fine or orders environmental studies before a project is allowed to continue. Only rarely do authorities order removal or demolition.

‘Tis the Season for Complaining about higher electricity bills here in Yucatan.
aka … Follow the Money … Money Talks !
Most immigrants here are seem unaware of the last 40 yr of CFE policies that give large government-handout subsidies of free power during the “Hot Season” (April-Sept) … of $1000 pesos of handouts per BEACH-bill during the Hot season at the beach … and $2,000 pesos of Merida*city handouts per bill in Merida …
– and then … the government-handout subsidies of free power are trimmed back for the Oct-March “Cool Season” months … as the bigger govt handouts are shown on May-Nov. bills … and then smaller ~handouts~ appear on our Dec.-April bills.**
…
For me, as a Mexican taxpayer, paying to subsidize artificially cheap power to foreigners … I am kind of confused by immigrants complaining that their government handout got smaller from Dec-April … ???
?
$$$ Specifics?
The last 40 yrs of CFE policy has been that a typical immigrant’s beach-CFE-Bill goes up by 87% during the cool season, as almost 2X higher bills when using the same amount of kWh of electricity … due to getting smaller govt. handouts during the Cool Season.
Sure, lots of intenet posts mistakenly claim that:
“Something NEW is going on.”
“Maybe, somebody tapped into your power. “
“The Government changed their policy.”
“Have your electric meter checked … “
…
Yet … We’re simple experiencing the normal last 40 yrs of annual officially changing from LARGER “Hot Season” subsidies of govt. handouts of free power … to SMALLER “Cool Season” month’s subsidies of less govt. handouts of free power.
Seriously … Nothing much has changed … as we expect almost DOUBLED CFE bills when we go from CFE Hot Season big govt. handouts versus the Cool Season’s much smaller govt. handouts …
There has been one change this past 12 yrs … … The Excedente rate (cost of producing electricity) has gone from $2.8 per kWh in the past, now up to $3.7 per kWh … mostly due to a weaker peso & due to a drop in Mexican oil production … causing CFE to hemhorrage over $200 million pesos of losses per year … shortfalls PAID by us Mexican taxpayers.
Doubters are welcomed to check out the various CFE subsidies, using the CFE link …. where Basico rates show the most VERY*heavily tax-payer subsidized rates …. versus the two Intermedio heavily-subsidized rates …. versus the Excedente (cost of producing & delivering electricity) rates
… as readers are welcomed to plug in “April” for the beginning of our “Hot Season” here … and enter the hot season or cool season month that you want to check.
Despite their complaints … in 2025 Beach Dwellers really do get $812 of free power each bill … paid for by us Mexican taxpayers every hot season … and they get just $536 of Mexican Taxpayer Handouts of free power from CFE … on evey Dec – April bill …
Meanwhile, further South, Meridanos using a lot of power get $1,850 pesos of Mexican Taxpayer Handouts of free power from CFE on evey May-Nov. bill … and they get just $609 of Mexican Taxpayer Handouts of free power from CFE on evey Dec – April bill.
Conclusions?
Sadly, in our modern world … typical USA & Canadian immigrants coming to Mexico really do publicly complain …. bitterly … every year … when our Mexican govt. annually cuts the size of the ~handouts~ of FREE POWER given to the expat-immigrants during the Cool Season months …
Why?
I think Boomer expats believe their anthem …

Surviving Yucatan
Change gonna come … Tren Maya news By yucalandia on December 30, 2024
Dec. 30, 2024 Tren Maya Reminders … & Updates
Fresh questions keep coming up about the Tren Maya … schedules … and delays …
Remember the Current Factual Contexts:
As they keep adding new trains … the schedules change every 2 weeks, so the Tren Maya system has only been selling tickets online for 2 weeks or less in advance. … as it can be best to buy your ticket in person at the La Plancha station, or at their Torre Nia office in north Merida.
and no …
Our Tren Maya PROGRAM … is not just some mythical bullet-train from Cancun to Palenque … It’s actually at least 5 total big different rail systems, most still in their final planning phases. … plus a BIG natural gas pipeline system from Vera Cruz to Merida … running alongside the Tren Maya tracks …
and yes … Remember that trains … run at least 20X more efficiently that buses & trucks … and they have 20X less pollution.
As 100,000’s of freight containers are scheduled to come from Taiwan, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Indonesia & Malaysia are scheduled to be dropped off at our new BIG Pacific Ocean port at the new Istmo de Tehuantepec mega-rail corridor program – shipping 100,000’s of future containers of parts & materials to the new maquiladora complex going in just west of Merida … and all those fresh new finished goods will flow straight out to the sea … to USA, Canda & Europe … through our new BIG port outside of Progreso.
Short Term vs. Long Term Realities:
The system is still in it’s near infancy … of a big 5 yr planned roll-out of 5 big new programs, under the “Tren Maya” umbrella … including electric trains, hybrid trains
… high-speed express tourist trains …
… and freight trains from the Istmo de Tehuantepec all the way to Merida & Progreso’s new zona de maquiladoras …
& even a special Tren Maya route to Progreso’s NEW PORT …
So … Just like babies only crawl, at first …. and then toddle along in uncertain steps … and the ultimately run along gleefully … and joyfully … REMEMBER that our Tren Maya system really is still just in it’s ~ INFANCY ~ …

Beware of the SAT inspection for your income in 2024: You cannot exceed this amount
By Max O. December 31, 2024 in Economics

How to apply for an ETA for the UK in 5 steps: Step-by-step guide for Mexicans
You should be careful with the SAT inspection for your income starting in 2024, because you may have to pay more taxes and start to be of greater interest to the tax entity. In this article we are going to delve into the issue of monthly deposits exceeding 15,000 pesos and the implications they may have for you as a taxpayer.
If you want to stay up to date on the new changes coming in 2025, you should read about the mandatory SAT procedure for 2025 that you must complete in January .
What happens with the SAT if they deposit more than 15,000 pesos?
Banking institutions that belong to the Mexican financial system are required to report when their clients receive deposits of more than 15,000 pesos. These may be in a single deposit or several deposits totaling more than this amount during a month. When this happens, financial institutions must report it to the SAT.
It should be noted that those who exceed this amount do not have problems with the SAT. They will only have to pay a small tax. Of course, this also means that they enter the radar of the tax authority and it is possible that more in-depth inspections are carried out on the income of these people. This is with the aim of looking for discrepancies between tax returns and deposits.
This is where things can get a little complicated. Because if a SAT inspection detects that the declared and real income do not match, an audit will be initiated to verify the origins of said funds.
And if the origin of all the deposits you have received cannot be justified, the SAT has the power to reclassify said income as cumulative and thus apply fines, surcharges, and even harsher sanctions if illegal activities are suspected.
It should also be noted that when monthly deposits exceed 15,000 pesos, financial institutions will automatically charge 3% on the excess, which is part of the cash deposit tax.
Which deposits can be reviewed?
Let’s be clear about the following: all deposits exceeding 15,000 pesos will be subject to a review by the SAT. This can escalate into an audit if significant discrepancies are noted. In addition, those who exceed 15,000 pesos in accumulated deposits during a month may set off alarm bells.
These are the best beaches in Yucatán to visit in 2025
written by Yucatan Times January 27, 2025 0 comment
The state of Yucatán is known for its impressive archaeological zones and cenotes but also for its paradisiacal beaches that, in 2025, continue to be unmissable destinations for national and international tourists. Below, we present a guide to the best beaches in the state, highlighting their beauty, activities and what makes them unique.
Progreso
Just 30 minutes from Mérida, Progreso is the most accessible and popular beach among locals. Its extensive boardwalk has restaurants, bars, and craft shops, while its calm waters are perfect for families. Progreso is also an arrival point for international cruises, consolidating itself as a gateway to tourism in Yucatan.
Celestún
Known for its Biosphere Reserve, Celestún combines soft sand beaches with an impressive ecosystem of mangroves and wildlife. In winter and spring, visitors can enjoy the spectacular view of thousands of pink flamingos in their natural habitat. This destination is ideal for those seeking tranquility and a direct connection with nature.
Sisal
Sisal is positioning itself as one of the emerging jewels of the state. Its history as an old henequén export port mixes with its renewed tourist charm. Sisal’s beaches stand out for their cleanliness and tranquility, in addition to their ecotourism activities, such as kayaking and dolphin watching.
Telchac Puerto
Telchac is the perfect destination for those looking for a relaxed and less crowded getaway. This small fishing port offers shallow water beaches and a family atmosphere. In addition, it is close to attractions such as the pink lagoons of X’cambó and the archaeological zone of the same name, making it a multifaceted destination.
El Cuyo
Located in the northeast corner of the state, El Cuyo is a little-explored paradise that combines white sands, turquoise waters, and a bohemian atmosphere. Popular among kitesurfing fans, this destination is ideal for those looking to disconnect and enjoy a practically untouched natural environment.
Las Coloradas
Although technically best known for its spectacular pink lagoons, Las Coloradas also has nearby beaches that are ideal for enjoying unique views and unforgettable photographs. Its proximity to the Río Lagartos Reserve allows tourists to explore local wildlife, such as crocodiles and exotic birds.
Many of these beaches are part of fragile ecosystems that require care and respect. Local authorities and environmental organizations continually work on initiatives to promote sustainable tourism and preserve these natural wonders for future generations.
Visiting the beaches of Yucatán in 2025 is an enriching experience that combines natural beauty, history, and culture. Each destination offers something unique, inviting travelers to discover the charm of this region of southeastern Mexico.
