A Progreso beach is more popular now that the pigs have moved in By Abraham Bojórquez May 27, 2022

This is the simple concept that is drawing more and more visitors to Pig Beach in Yucalpetén, the place a family of these adorable creatures now call home.  Read more

The recently opened tourist attraction between Chelem and Progreso houses eight Vietnamese pigs and was created as a space for recreation and raising awareness for animal protection.

The story of Pig Beach is about second chances, and how unfavorable circumstances can take a turn for the better. In mid-2021, authorities were notified about strange noises coming from an empty lot in Progreso. While inspecting, the municipality found eight newborn piglets and their dying mother.

Where the mother came from or who her owners were is unknown. Progreso’s Environmental Police Corps took care of the family, but unfortunately, it was already too late for the mother.

One day, the pigs were taken to a little-frequented beach. Environmental Police officials noticed that the piglets enjoyed playing in the sea and chilling in the sand. The municipality then had the idea to create a tourist attraction around them, similar to the one that exists in the Bahamas.

And just like that, the pigs went from vulnerable orphans to beloved local celebrities, and the beach itself underwent quite a transformation. It used to be a forgotten corner, covered in litter and discarded tires. Now, the place is not only clean but has become the first smoke-free beach in Yucatán.

The piggies quickly became local darlings and were given names like Petunia, Pepa, Walt, and Rocky. They spend most of their day inside a barn but are let out to roam free for an hour starting at noon Thursday through Sunday. If you want to swim or take a selfie with them, this is your window of opportunity.

Some seem to enjoy getting their backs wet for a while —they are being taught to swim, for their safety. They would be outside longer, but the ecological police say their skin is sensitive to the sun.

Others just like to bask in the sunlight while they twist and wallow in the sand. They are all extremely friendly to humans, but they can get stressed pretty quickly if overly harassed.

In adulthood, the pigs weigh from 90 to 130 pounds. They can live up to 20 years and are extremely intelligent. They feed mostly on fruits and green vegetables and, as the sign by the barn at Pig Beach emphasizes, they must not eat chocolate under any circumstances.

Do’s and Don’ts at Pig Beach
Do: caress the pigs, take photos with them, join them at the beach.

Don’t: feed them, carry or drag them, let children harass them

Jesús Campos of the Environmental Police gave us the good news that one of the female pigs is expecting babies, due the first week of June. He explained that they are attempting to inseminate all females in the family during their first year because it is not safe for them to give birth after that. The plan, of course, is to grow the family. To ensure that the males don’t impregnate their sisters, they all have been neutered.

Pig Beach has the potential to introduce a new kind of tourism in the area, one that has an educational and environmental aspect to it.

If you go
From Mérida, take the highway to Progreso and then turn left at the exit to Chelem. After coming down the bridge, take a left on Calle 22 and then a right on Indeco. The entrance is at the end of the road, to the left.

Court sets limits for ‘racist’ immigration checkpoints in Mexico

Mexican immigration agents can no longer conduct stop-and-search operations on buses and highways after the Supreme Court ruled that such checks are racist, discriminatory, and unconstitutional.

While that may be a relief to tourists riding an ADO bus without a passport, the landmark ruling stems from a case involving migrant workers from Mexico’s poorest region.

Judges sided with three young Indigenous Mexicans who were detained and abused by immigration officials in 2015 during a US-backed crackdown.

The siblings – aged 15 to 24 – were on a bus of seasonal farmhands in Querétaro, central Mexico, when apprehended by agents who targeted them because of their physical features, clothes, and limited Spanish.

The agents accused them of being undocumented immigrants from neighboring Guatemala, but they were Tzeltal Mayans from Chiapas, where 25% of the population speak an Indigenous language.

Shortly after the ordeal, the sisters, Amy and Esther, and their brother were taken to a detention center and held illegally for eight days. Alberto, then 18 and unable to read or write, was beaten and given electric shocks until he agreed to sign a deportation document falsely stating that they were Guatemalan.

The High Court ruled that 2011 immigration reforms allowing agents to stop and search anyone anywhere in Mexico are unconstitutional because agents would be free to identify undocumented migrants based on their race, skin color, physical appearance, and language.

Immigration checkpoints have spread across Mexico since 2014, as part of a bilateral US-Mexico plan to stop migrants from reaching the US border.

The ruling calls into question the role of Mexico’s armed forces, especially the national guard — a militarized public security agency created by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — which has been deployed across the country to assist the INM. According to the court, the INM can only carry out ID checks at ports, airports, land border crossings, and other limited situations.

The government hasn’t commented on the ruling, which was handed down on Wednesday.

The inclusive beach of Progreso continues to receive dozens of visitors May 28, 2022

The Inclusive Beach, located in the heart of the boardwalk of this port, continues to receive dozens of visitors to whom it provides quality service and attention with the help of different special equipment, floating chairs and lifeguards.

Children, adolescents, adults and the elderly or people with disabilities have enjoyed the sand and the sea of ??the port without any impediment and with the attention of specialized personnel. As is known, this service is provided by the Commune through the Municipal DIF.

On one side of this beach, there is also a carousel for children with disabilities, as it has the necessary accessories so that they can get on the attraction and have fun.

The inclusive beach was visited this week by elderly people, who due to health conditions can hardly enter the sea, for which they were grateful that these types of spaces exist so that they can enjoy the beaches of Progreso.

The so-called “inclusive beach” has five amphibious chairs, equipped with floating armrests and three smooth wheels for easy transport on the sand, which offer the possibility of safely transferring people to the sea, they also have a seat belt , the backrest is wide and made of a fabric resistant to ultraviolet rays and salt water. All this, under the supervision of lifeguards who are duly trained.

This beach was put into service by Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi in 2019, providing service to locals and tourists from all over the country, all this so that visitors with some type of disability can also enjoy the beaches without any impediment.

It works during hours from 8 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm and on Sundays only during vacation periods during regular hours.Another six new infections in ProgresoPublished 2 days ago the May 27, 2022By progress today

Medical report for this Friday, May 27:

In Yucatan, the mandatory use of face masks in open spaces is withdrawn. The measure is maintained for closed spaces and public transport. It is recommended, as a preventive measure, the use of face masks in older adults, with comorbidities that put their health at risk or who present symptoms of a respiratory disease.

As has been pointed out, in the economic reopening the most important data are hospital occupancy and daily admissions. Today we have 8 patients in public hospitals.

103,536 patients have already recovered: they have no symptoms and cannot be contagious. This figure represents 93% of the total registered infections, which is 111,213.

Today 94 new infections of Coronavirus were detected:

Paperwork In Spanish Chaos

México is requiring Expat residents to get a tax identification number.  The problem is you have to get an appointment and need the number by the end of June.

Since millions of Expat residents are here in México this is impossible to do in a month.  All my experts in this stuff here are telling me not to worry about since millions of people won’t be able to make the deadline.

It’s just another example of paperwork requirements in a lot of foreign countries are so much more complicated than your home country.  Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

If you happen to one of millions of Mexico Expat residents you can go to Citas site and get your tax id number if you don’t have it yet.

May 24 CITY HALL Deputies will approve new rates for the Jurassic Path of Progreso

PROGRESO.– The City Council of Progreso requested the State Congress to modify its Income Law 2022, in order to be able to charge the entrance to the so-called “Jurassic Trail”, the new tourist attraction that it promotes on the grounds of the Chicxulub Puerto police station. .

The new park, as we reported, has not yet been inaugurated. On several occasions, its possible opening has been reported, but it has not happened yet.  In this regard, the City Council has been reporting that this is because the staff is undergoing training. Although it is partly true, the main reason that it has not opened is because the City Council is not legally empowered to charge the entrance to the place, since the fees are not contemplated in its Income Law.
Now, with the requested modification, which is expected to be approved without major problems by the deputies in Congress, the Buenos Aires City Council will be able to open the new park and make the stipulated charges.

THE FEES OF THE JURASSIC TRAIL…

As is known, the entrance fee to the new park, which promises to be quite an experience for visitors, has also generated criticism and conflicting opinions. Some consider it expensive and others point out that the entrance fee is reasonable, compared to other attractions in Mérida and different parts of the State. Others point out that it will be a striking attraction for national and foreign tourism and will leave an economic income for the Commune.
Although the entrance will be free for Progreso people from Monday to Friday, locals will have to pay their entrance if they go on Saturdays or Sundays.
The rates that will be charged, according to what the City Council of Progreso has informed, are the following:

* Children from 3 to 10 years old $100 pesos
* Youth from 11 to 17 years old $150 pesos
* Adults from 18 years old and older $200 pesos (Older adults with Inapam pay half)
* Foreigners will pay 10 dollars for the entrance.

(THESE ARE THE RATES THAT HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED, ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THEY HAVE VARIATIONS IN THE MODIFICATION)

*** MEET THE SPONSORS OF THE JURASSIC TRAIL OF PROGRESS (click to read)

The Jurassic Trail initially contemplates a 500-meter walk in the open air, with life-size replicas of dinosaurs, themed activities that tell the story of the extinction of the dinosaurs and the Chicxulub crater, guided by site workers, scenarios with augmented reality and audio guides, among other things.
The construction of the first stage of this new park was sponsored with some 60 donations from private companies that invested some $5 million pesos -according to the City Council-, and in exchange for the money they contributed, they will have publicity in visible places throughout the park. of the entire tourist walk.

It is expected that once the new charges are approved to include them in the City Council Revenue Law, the park will open in the next few days, possibly this weekend, or during the next one. (#Find out First at ProgresoHoy.com)May 22/

Mérida.– For having the lowest rates at the national level in homicides, crimes with violence and with firearms, Yucatán obtained the first national place in the Mexico Peace Index 2021, as a result of the efforts of the Government of Mauricio Vila Dosal to preserve the climate of security and tranquility of the state.

The measurement carried out by the Institute for Economy and Peace (IEP) reported that the entity obtained a score of 1,254, better than the national average of 2,605, given that a lower score indicates a higher level of peace.

In this sense, the IEP indicated that, in the Homicide sub-index, Yucatán ranked first nationally, with a score of 1,103, better than the national average of 2,335.

For the Violent Crime sub-index, the state also leads the top spot nationally, with a score of 1,201, better than the national average of 3.18.

In terms of Crimes with firearms, Yucatán obtained the first national place, with a score of 1,045, better than the national average of 2,594.

In recent days, the entity was also recognized for the fourth consecutive year, among the first places in the country, as the best qualified in justice, obtaining a score of 0.47, a figure higher than the national average of 0.41 in the Index. of the Rule of Law in Mexico (IEDMX) 2021-2022, measurement carried out by the international organization World Justice Project.

This speaks of the good teamwork promoted by the Governor to maintain the security conditions that characterize the state.

At the same time, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), reaffirms these good conditions that exist in the entity by indicating that, in the Law and Political System sections, Yucatán registered a rating of 85 and 73 points respectively, ranking third consecutive year in the first position at the national level in both areas

Hurricane Season

The hurricane season extends from May 15 to November 30. Please share the following important information with all the Canadian citizens in your area.

This year again, we anticipate an above normal season and some storms may even form before the official start of the season. This new season will still take place in a context of COVID-19 and precautions are still in order, including for cruises.

The 2022 Pacific Hurricane Season forecast is for a total of 14 to 18 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes and 2-4 major hurricanes.

The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast is for a total of 19 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes.

The key to hurricane or tropical storm protection is preparation. We encourage you and your family to review your personal safety practices. By taking sensible measures before, during and after a hurricane, many lives can be saved and property damage averted.

A hurricane preparedness plan includes three basic elements that are important in the threat of any severe weather event:

1) maintain a disaster or emergency supply kit;

2) secure your home and property; and

3) have a safe place to go in the event of an evacuation or prolonged utility outage.

Keep informed by listening to the latest warnings and advisories on radio, television or web sites. Hurricane Centers will issue and update these when necessary. It is also important to follow the advice of local authorities and emergency response personnel.

Remember to add the Mexican national number for emergency calls – 911 – to your address book. You may also download the 9-1-1 Emergencias free application (in Spanish only) to your smartphones. More information on the application is available at www.gob.mx/911 (in Spanish only).

Site logo imageSurviving YucatanMexico’s Three New Requirements for Foreign Residents to Register with SATyucalandiaMay 20May 20, 2022:
All foreigners in Mexico on Residente Temporal & Resident Permanente visas, and anyone over age 18 with a CURP, face 2 new requiremnts by July 1’st, 2022. The latest changes to Mexican law will require foreign residents to:1. Get RFC numbers (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) from SAT-Hacienda to register as a taxpayer-resident in Mexico, and then2. Get a “Constancia de Situacion Fiscal” document from SAT-Hacienda, as proof of Tax – Fiscal registration with SAT, and3. That “Constancia de Situacion Fiscal” document will be necessary to be an electricity (CFE), water, or internet customer in Mexico. Further, any buying or selling of a car or house or property will also require having an RFC and the Constancia de Situacion Fiscal document.Sidelights:
First … Unfortunately, these actions directed at fat cats & big criminals, also flow down over the rest of us, who are living simple lives, uncomplicated by money laundering, gun-running, & drug smuggling. These new requirements are being driven by the USA’s ongoing War on Drugs & USA’s War on Money laundering – pressuring Mexico to address these problems, which then flows down onto the rest of us, just like the USA’s 2009-2010 new laws on foreign bank accounts & the 2009-2010’s new laws driving US banks to cut off accounts by 2017 for Americans living abroad.Second … These new requirements come at a peculiarly difficult time, because the SAT-Hacienda systems for creating new RFC accounts are working very poorly these past months. How to Register for an RFC Appointment with SAT-Hacienda:
SAT’s current system for registering for an RFC requires the foreigner to register online to get an appointment to come in to an SAT-Hacienda office, to both register, get ID fotos & supply fingerprints.SAT Online Appointement Website:
https://citas.sat.gob.mx/When online at the SAT portal, we request an appointment ( “Registrar Cita ” ), and then choose the option as an individual taxpayer ( “Persona Fisica ” ), and then enter your CURP number. Also note that you will need to take an official copy of your CURP document to your SAT appointment – so keep it handy when you get it out to register online for your SAT RFC appointment. The next parts of the online SAT RFC appointment request process are straightforward:
On the next page after entering your CURP, you select the service you want (RFC appointment), & choose the state you whant to appy in.NOTE: … Our local Merida SAT-Hacienda office has been taking 2 – 4 months to issue appointments, so many people who need to buy or sell a house, property, or car have been making their appontments at either Campeche’s or Chetumal’s (Q. Roo) SAT-Hacienda offices. After you select the state you want to apply in, you will either be given the option to choose a date on a calendar, or you will face a notice that says no appointments are available at this time – which is why many foreigners in Yucatan are jumping to Campeche or Chetumal (Q. roo), but even those appointments are filling up now.If you face the “no appointments available” option, you will then have the option to choose to enter a virtual line – queue (“fila virtual“), which gets you in to the system, but the last 3 months of internet reports by foreigners show that you may not get a notice for an appointment for another 4 months. Applying for a spot in the fila virtual, and then entering your email, enables SAT to send you an alpha-numerical “token” that is used to join the virtual line.At that point, you sit and wait, and moniter your email for a notice from SAT notifying you of your appointment date. As you go in for your appointment, you’ll need a short list of documents. The current SAT website lists:
~ A valid migratory document (your Residente visa card);
~ A comprabante, (proof of address), like a bank statement, CFE electric bill, or copy of your rental agreement-contract.
~ Your passportNote … Assorted internet reports describe that many SAT officies are also requiring that you show a copy of your CURP document, even though this is not reported on the SAT website.Recent internet reports also describe that you should bring a USB memory stick, for SAT to download a personal digital signature “firma digital” for future use. At that point SAT takes your ID foto, takes your finger prints (all at no charge). Finally, recent inteernet reports say that the process takes about 40 minutes.Final Note: As these new requirements come online, there will be consequences from the new legal requirements: People who want to sign up for internet services, for water services, for CFE accounts … or to buy or sell a house, property or car, will have to provide both their RFC number, and their Constancia de Situacion Fiscal document….
We will continue to update this article as the situations evolve.Stay informed … Stay healthy … Stay safe …Dr. Steven M.
